Scion Fortrose Durif Viognier 2019

Scion Fortrose Durif Viognier 2019

Scion Fortrose Durif Viognier 2019

This decision is commendable, as it challenges the common perception of Durif as a powerhouse red. Instead, this wine showcases elegance and finesse, offering aromas of dark fruit, blueberry, oak spice, and rosemary, with a subtle floral note. It presents the essence of the Durif grape with finesse, delivering firm tannins and a black heart within a medium-bodied, complex wine.

Durif co-fermented with a touch of Viognier (3%), sourced from hand-picked fruit with 30% whole bunches. It undergoes wild open fermentation and is then basket pressed into French oak (20% new) for 16 months of maturation. The winemaker opts not to label this wine as Durif, encouraging drinkers to approach it with an open mind.  An great tasting alternative varietal from an avant garde winemaker. Durif, originally from the southern coast of France has been planted in the Rutherglen to take advantage of it's drought resistance and love of sun.
