Picardy Pinot Noir 2020
Picardy Pinot Noir 2020
The standout feature here is the remarkable purity of fruit, characterized by generous aromas of dark cherry and stalky spice, enhanced by the inclusion of 25% whole bunch (a slight increase from the usual 20%). These are complemented by subtle notes of damp soil, lavender, and potpourri. On the palate, the wine displays beautiful balance, with a dense core of red berry fruit supported by substantial yet finely woven tannins that lead to a long, savory finish. While still youthful and brooding, it's evident that this wine will benefit from additional aging to fully develop its complexity and depth.
Picardy, under the ownership of Dr. Bill Pannell, his wife Sandra, and their son Daniel, holds a significant place in Australian winemaking. Bill and Sandra's legacy in the industry extends back to the founding of Moss Wood winery in Margaret River in 1969. Initially, Picardy focused on Bill's belief in Pemberton as a premier region for pinot noir and chardonnay. However, it has since become evident that Pemberton's viticultural landscape encompasses influences from both Burgundy and Bordeaux, as well as the Rhône Valley. It's important to note that the Pannell Family wines represent a distinct venture from Picardy.
