Joshua Cooper Greytown Old Vines Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Renowned wine expert Mike Bennie hails Joshua Cooper as one of Australia's most promising young winemakers, known for crafting elegant and confident wines sourced from Macedon and surrounding areas. Cooper's Greytown Vineyard, located in the northeastern Heathcote region, was planted in the 1950s using traditional methods without irrigation. The vineyard boasts some of the region's oldest vines, thriving in nutrient-rich alluvial soils. The vineyard features a unique field blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested together to capture the essence of the site and growing season.

After a three-week fermentation period, the wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of one-year-old Stockinger 600L barrels, Spanish stoneware jars, and seasoned Bordeaux barrels. Following maturation, the wine undergoes four additional months of settling in stainless steel tanks before bottling, with only minimal sulphur added as an additive. While already delightful, this wine promises further complexity with moderate aging, and decanting is recommended when enjoyed young.

Described as a captivating drink, the wine exhibits a beautiful core of sweet fruit, encompassing both red and black berries, with hints of pastille and choc-mint. Aromas of mahogany, liquorice, white pepper, and green olive add depth to the palate. The wine's structure is well-balanced, showcasing broad-shouldered yet refined tannins infused with spice and graphite. With both density and freshness, the wine offers a lengthy finish, characterized by succulent tannins. Impressively crafted, this wine is recommended for consumption between 2023 and 2040.
