Tyrrell's Sacred Sites NVC Shiraz 2023

Tyrrell's Sacred Sites NVC Shiraz 2023
Founded in the mid-1800s, Tyrrell’s is one of Australia’s oldest family-run wineries. Edward Tyrrell planted the initial vineyard in 1858 on a 330-acre property in the Hunter Valley, with winemaking beginning in 1864.
The NVC Vineyard was planted in 1921 and was traditionally the home of Vat 5, a stalwart in our membership red offerings for many years. More recently it has been released under our Single Vineyard collection of wines, but this 2023 vintage marks its first release as one of our unique Sacred Sites wines. This great 103-year-old vineyard is an important and indeed sacred site on the Tyrrell Family Estate, and we are pleased to be releasing it under our iconic yellow label. A piece of Tyrrell’s wine history.
On 18 February, the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before a natural fermentation took place in our open top vats, 20% whole bunch inclusion. After fermentation, the wine was matured in a single new French oak cask for 14 months.
Tasting Notes
"The NVC vineyard (New Vine Cuttings) was planted in 1921. The wine has a distinctive personality, with warm red mulberry, dried dark cherry and an engaging ironstone thread that anchors and defines the palate. Fragrant, nutty oak weaves through the wine, adding pronounced savoury tones. The fruit is composed, less juicy than others, though no less charming and bursting with character. Decanting is recommended to harmonise the elements. 2800 bottles were produced." 95 Points - Halliday Wine Companion, Toni Paterson (2025).
