Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2018

Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2018
Founded by Clare Valley pioneer Jim Barry, this family-owned winery has played a vital role in establishing the region as a benchmark for world-class Riesling and premium Australian wines. Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, and his legacy continues through three generations of family winemakers.
With a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and community, Jim Barry Wines is renowned for producing expressive, regionally distinct wines, particularly their iconic Rieslings and elegant reds. Today, the Barry family remains at the helm, proudly upholding their heritage and passion for the Clare Valley.
The name ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and named the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968 the vineyard was planted by Jim Barry and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600mm per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.
Tasting Notes
"This has the smoky, sultry thing going on. It has a richness of flavour and oak, all toasty, with charcuterie and iodine inputs. Yet, the fruit has absorbed the oak, restructuring its DNA to match. Full bodied, without question, the tannins ripe, sweet, luscious and creamy. But this is not overblown – there's a balance and it's so important. It has gravitas." 96 Points - Halliday Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner (2021).
