Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Elderton is a Barossa icon with roots tracing back to 1894, when the Scholz family first planted vines on the banks of the North Para River. In 1980, Neil and Lorraine Ashmead took a chance on a neglected vineyard and homestead in Nuriootpa, restoring what would become one of Australia’s great wine estates. Surrounded by ancient Shiraz and Cabernet vines, the Ashmeads revived the property with passion and vision. Today, Elderton is family-run and continues to craft powerful, expressive wines from some of the Barossa’s oldest plantings.

It may be just a tiny little parcel of Cabernet planted in the 1940s, however what a powerful little flavour packed expression it is. The Ashmead block has consistently produced small parcels of excellent quality fruit for several years. The block was almost destroyed in 1997 to make way for higher yielding vines, however the family made the decision to promote the vineyard to a higher destiny, thus the Ashmead.

This full-bodied red was aged in French oak for 18 months. It opens with rich aromas of blackcurrant, dark berries, cocoa, and spice. The palate is bold and smooth, with flavours of ripe blackcurrant, plum, a hint of liquorice, and subtle oak notes of cedar and tobacco.
