Serrat Grenache Noir 2024

Serrat Grenache Noir 2024
Serrat is a boutique winery owned and operated by Tom and Nadège Carson, with support from Kate Thurgood. Tom is an acclaimed Australian winemaker, known for his tenure as Chief Winemaker at Yering Station, where he helped shape the winery’s success.
A career highlight was winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2013 for the 2012 Yabby Lake Block 1 Pinot Noir, the first ever awarded to a Pinot Noir. Since 2008, he has led the Kirby Family Vineyards (Yabby Lake and Heathcote Estate) as General Manager and Chief Winemaker, while also judging at major wine shows.
Serrat reflects their combined expertise and passion, producing small-batch, estate-grown wines of precision and character. The Serrat vineyard was established in 2001, planted at an exceptional density of 8,800 vines per hectare, over four times the Australian average with plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, and a small amount of Grenache. Over the years, the vineyard has expanded thoughtfully, with additions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Malbec, and Grenache Noir (2010). In 2016, Serrat became the first to plant Grenache Blanc in Victoria, followed by more Nebbiolo and Shiraz in 2017.
This wine is from the original 2021 planting and a portion from the newer planting of the same clone in 2011. The clone is an old Barossa clone BVRC38.
Tasting Notes:
"There is a highly fragrant and detailed Grenache this year. It is crammed with trademark raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate and wild strawberry fruits. There is a spicy edge and the aromas lifted and fragrant with a floral edge as it opens. Fine silky and concentrated and poised it is a really delicious wine. The tannin structure and mouthfeel is juicy and intense and layered with raspberry and strawberry fruits. The length is there along with trademark chalky Grenache finish. It is delicious now as a good young Grenache should be, but it will continue to evolve and improve over the coming years." Tom Carson
"25% whole bunches and a natural-yeast fermentation with 14 days on skins. Matured in one 600L French cask. A light, bright crimson red. Floral-imbued aromas of spiced red cherry together with a little lavender and rose. Some jasmine, too. Very fresh and elegant in the mouth with silky tannins and a fine thread of acidity providing both structure and length. A pretty and seductive edition of what is, arguably, Australia's finest cool-climate grenache." 96 Points - Halliday Wine Companion, Philip Rich (2025).
