Garagiste Merricks Cuvee de Couer Sparkling 2018

Garagiste has become a standout name in Victoria’s cool-climate wine scene. Founded in 2006 by Barnaby Flanders after parting ways with Allies co-founder David Chapman, the label now focuses on small-batch wines that reflect the diversity of the Mornington Peninsula’s sub-regions.

Flanders sources fruit from carefully managed sites across the region, from the sandy soils of Tuerong and Moorooduc in the north, through the loamy and volcanic mid-zone of Merricks, to the elevated, red volcanic soils of Red Hill and Main Ridge. The Tuerong vineyard, planted in the late 1980s, remains the oldest site in his portfolio.

From the generous vintage of 2018, this second disgorgement has spent a further 12 months on lees than the first release, for 36 months in total. The extended aging on lees has certainly contributed further weight and concentration to this exceptional sparkling and has also warranted a lower dosage (only 1.75 g/L, while the previous release was dosed at 2.5 g/L), thereby maintaining the mannerisms of the first release, while subtly impacting the richness of the palate.
