Serrat Nebbiolo 2024

Serrat Nebbiolo 2024
Serrat is a boutique winery owned and operated by Tom and Nadège Carson, with support from Kate Thurgood. Tom is an acclaimed Australian winemaker, known for his tenure as Chief Winemaker at Yering Station, where he helped shape the winery’s success.
A career highlight was winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2013 for the 2012 Yabby Lake Block 1 Pinot Noir, the first ever awarded to a Pinot Noir. Since 2008, he has led the Kirby Family Vineyards (Yabby Lake and Heathcote Estate) as General Manager and Chief Winemaker, while also judging at major wine shows.
Serrat reflects their combined expertise and passion, producing small-batch, estate-grown wines of precision and character. The Serrat vineyard was established in 2001, planted at an exceptional density of 8,800 vines per hectare, over four times the Australian average with plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, and a small amount of Grenache. Over the years, the vineyard has expanded thoughtfully, with additions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Malbec, and Grenache Noir (2010). In 2016, Serrat became the first to plant Grenache Blanc in Victoria, followed by more Nebbiolo and Shiraz in 2017.
Tasting Notes:
"The aromas are pitch perfect Nebbiolo, red fruits, rose petals and hint of spice, just so detailed and pristine, beautifully poised. The palate is seamless and fine with lovely tension between acid and tannin. Detailed, fine, pristine fruit characters and effortlessly long and poised. It is pure and detailed and captivating glass of wine." Tom Carson
"Mudgee clone and a natural-yeast ferment for 14 days on skins. Matured in an older 500L French barrel. A light- to medium-bright garnet. The first nebbiolo since '21 and worth the wait. Perfumed and savoury with aromas of sour red cherries, blood orange, rose petals and dried Italian herbs. There's a nice interplay on the palate between the wine's good depth of fruit and fine-boned, gently chewy tannins. It's totally approachable now, with food, but will also age very nicely over the next five to seven or so years." 95 Points - Halliday Wine Companion, Philip Rich (2025).
