Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon 2018

Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon 2018

Founded in the mid-1800s, Tyrrell’s is one of Australia’s oldest family-run wineries. Edward Tyrrell planted the initial vineyard in 1858 on a 330-acre property in the Hunter Valley, with winemaking beginning in 1864.

Vat 1 Semillon is crafted exclusively from the finest fruit sourced from their best old-vine, dry-grown vineyards. At its heart lies the iconic Short Flat vineyard, home to plantings that date back to 1923. This vineyard's unique soil profile contributes to the remarkable length and depth of fruit that defines Vat 1.

All of the fruit was hand picked and carefully sorted in the vineyard. After a relatively cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

Tasting Notes

"At 6 years of age, the wine is beginning to bloom, displaying attractive ripe lemon, citrus curd and honeysuckle aromas. These characters are in the riper spectrum for this wine. The palate is on the generous side, but it still has the clarity and style one expects from Vat 1. There is no hiding the fact that '18 was a hot year. Consequently, this will be an earlier-drinking Vat 1, but no less enjoyable. That is the thing about iconic wines; the season may change, but their inherent qualities remain constant. Ready to drink on release." 97 Points - Toni Paterson, Halliday Wine Companion (2024)
