Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2014
Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2014
Established in 1970, Brokenwood Wines has evolved from a weekend venture for self-professed hobby winemakers into one of Australia’s most reputable wine labels.
Brokenwood was founded by a trio of Sydney-based solicitors, Tony Albert, John Beeston and James Halliday, who paid a then record price of $970 per acre for a 10-acre block in the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges. The original block was destined to be a cricket ground for the local community but was instead planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
First produced in 1983, the Graveyard Shiraz is a carefully classified selection of the best parcels, predominantly sourced from the vineyard's oldest plantings (these blocks are called Pa's, Middle, End & 7 Acre).
This Shiraz has earned its place among Australia’s finest, being included in the inaugural Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine and elevated to the prestigious ‘1st Classified’ category in 2010, a status it proudly maintains. Langton's describes it as “intensely perfumed, sumptuous, and seductive,” capturing the very essence of Hunter Valley Shiraz. It is widely regarded as the finest red wine of the region's contemporary era.
The Shiraz showcases mid-density colour with vibrant purple hues. The use of large French oak barrels allows the red spice and bramble fruit of the Hunter Shiraz to shine. The wine offers a supple palate, guided by the crucial acidity that underpins its structure and longevity.
Tasting Note
"It hardly needs be said this is a great Graveyard, shortlisted for Wine of the Year. It is full-bodied, with intense intersections and trails of black fruits, earth, leather, spice, oak and ripe tannins running in all directions. Its magic is that it remains coherent, with its line (or focus) never compromised." 98 Points - Halliday Wine Companion, James Halliday (2021).
