Wantirna Estate Amelia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018

Founded in 1963 by Reg Egan, Wantirna Estate was one of the pioneering vineyards of the modern Yarra Valley wine era. Inspired by a passion for wine rooted in his family’s Italian and English heritage, the estate initially experimented with a wide range of varieties before focusing on classic reds and whites. Winemaking responsibility has now passed to Maryann, who holds a degree in wine science from Charles Sturt University. The estate continues to produce premium wines from longstanding vines, including some original Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plantings from 1963, reflecting the rich history and character of the region.

A large proportion of the grapes for this wine come from the original 1963 plantings of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc vines. The remainder is from the more recently planted,1989 petit verdot. The vines for the Amelia are all dry farmed, there is no irrigation. The roots go deep into the clay soil, searching out any available moisture. This and the age of the vines is crucial to making the intense yet elegant wine.

This is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and Cabernet Franc mix and the remaining 8% being Petit Verdot.
